ROUGHCAST HOUSE

Status: On Site

This project involves the extensive refurbishment and reconfiguration of a 1960's semi-detached home.

The aim of the brief was to better utilise the floor area within the existing property, whilst also providing additional open-plan kitchen, dining, and living spaces. The challenging brief also sought to bring light into a house with a north-facing garden.

The concept references Louis Kahn's idea of 'servant and 'served' spaces. “Served” spaces being those that are actively used whilst “Servant” spaces exist to facilitate the served – principally staircases, bathrooms and utility rooms.

With this in mind, the servant spaces were arranged along one side of the plan, thus grouping them in one zone. An additional benefit of this approach is that it facilitates the construction process by largely avoiding the complexities of having to thread new services through the existing building fabric.
